Day 1 Thursday 13/09/18: Travel to Liverpool
After picking up along our usual coach boarding routes we have coffee and biscuits at the Holiday Inn Hotel Rochester. Refreshed, we all join the main coach for the journey to Liverpool, stopping for a lunch break in Banbury. The coach will drop us off by the famous Banbury Cross and there are pubs, cafes and restaurants nearby. We continue our journey to the hotel arriving in the late afternoon. After check in you will have time to freshen up and relax [even grab a quick swim in the heated indoor pool?] before dinner in the hotel this evening.
Day 2 Friday 14/09/18: Guided Coach tour and the Albert Dock
After breakfast we will drive into Liverpool to meet our guide at the Albert Dock. The guide will join us on our coach and take us off on a City Panoramic and Beatles Highlights Tour. This tour includes all the major buildings of Liverpool together with a visit to either see the homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney or the locations featured in two of their most famous songs, Penny Lane and Strawberry Field. After our tour the coach will drop us back at the Albert Dock for a free afternoon. There is so much to see at the Dock and all along the waterfront here. At the Albert Dock you can choose from: Merseyside Maritime Museum, International Slavery Museum, Tate Liverpool, The Beatles Story and plenty of cafes and restaurants. Just along the waterfront within easy walking distance are The Wheel of Liverpool, The Three Graces [The Royal Liver, Cunard and Port of Liverpool Buildings] The British Music Experience and the Museum of Liverpool, Just across from the waterfront is Liverpool One Shopping Centre. You can do as much, or as little as you like. Our coach will take us back to the hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner in the hotel this evening.
Day 3 Saturday 15/09/18: The Anderton Boat Lift and Tatton Park
After breakfast our first visit of the day is to the Anderton Boat Lift in Northwich, which hasearned its nickname of Cathedral of the Canals for a very good reason. Not only does it do the job it was designed to do, way back in 1875, of lifting narrow boats and barges straight up the 50 ft from the River Weaver to the Trent and Mersey Canal, but is does it with the most ingenious and endearing character of any structure on the canal system. We will enjoy a boat trip on the lift together with a short cruise. And on the way, our guide shares the story of the lift, the people of the waterways that used it and the people who brought it back to life. Then on to the famous Tatton Park. We visited here some years ago to take in the RHS Tatton Park Flower show. This time we will be able to enjoy the magnificent Stately Home and gardens. Dinner in the hotel this evening.
Day 4 Sunday 16/09/18: Ness Botanical Gardens and Ferry Cross the Mersey
After breakfast our coach will drive us to the Wirral Peninsula to Ness Botanic Gardens. Originally created by Arthur Kilpin Bulley in 1898 and bequeathed to the University of Liverpool by his daughter after his death in 1942, the garden showcases Bulley’s passion for new plants, many of which were early introductions from China, the Himalayas, Tibet and Burma. If you don’t want to explore there are about 200 benches situated around the gardens so you should be able to find a place to sit and relax. There is also a lovely visitor centre and café. Our coach will then take us back to Liverpool Waterfront via the Mersey Tunnels to be dropped off at the Albert Dock. A short walk brings us to Pier Head where we will join a River Explorer Cruise and see Liverpool's most iconic sights aboard a world-famous Mersey Ferry. The 50-minute Cruise takes in the best views along the riverside. Guided by expert commentary throughout the trip we can relax, take in the views and be captivated as the rich and fascinating history of UNESCO World Heritage waterfront unfolds before us. A lovely way to end our final day in this exciting city. We return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 5 Monday 17/09/18: Return to Kent
Our drive home will include a stop for lunch at a convenient point along our route. If we are delayed by traffic we may resort to using the motorway services. Then we rejoin our coach to take us back to the Holiday Inn Hotel Rochester, arriving around mid afternoon, for a welcome cup of tea before we continue our journey home.
