Merriments and Pashley Manor Gardens

A summers day out to two beautiful gardens in East Sussex

Thursday 3rd August 2017

Enjoy a pleasant day out visiting two lovely gardens just across the Kent/Sussex Border, so not too far away. On this occasion we will not have coffee at the Great Danes Hotel, but will travel straight from Hythe to Merriments aiming to arrive there around 11am. Our coach boarding times are 30 minutes later than usual, the advantage of staying fairly local.

Merriments Gardens has the distinction of being an RHS partner garden, so you can be sure of a memorable visit to a special place.  The garden itself is quite small, but there is plenty to see. There is also the shop and nursery to look at and the Garden Terrace Restaurant where we can buy coffee and lunch. The restaurant prides itself on its reputation for great home-made food and friendly service. If the weather is kind there is a sunny terrace for outdoor dining.  [Please note that if you want to have a picnic it has to be eaten in the car park and there are no picnic tables]

After lunch our coach will drive us to nearby Pashley Manor Gardens. This will be our 3rd visit to this delightful place.

Mr and Mrs James Sellick are the owners and inhabitants of Pashley Manor, a Grade I listed timber-framed house, dating from 1550 and enlarged in 1720. They opened their gardens to the public in 1992, having brought them to their present splendour with the assistance of the eminent landscape architect the late Anthony du Gard Pasley and their team of gardeners.  Enjoy the romantic English landscaping and artistic planting framed by fine old trees, fountains and ponds, with the unusual Tudor/Georgian manor house, which is a private family home, creating a memorable backdrop to the beautiful and dynamic gardens.  Delight in the sweeping herbaceous borders, elegant rose and historic walled gardens, the productive kitchen garden, enchanting woodland paths and tranquil vistas that form this award-winning garden.

Relish the gardeners’ attention to detail; savour the homemade, local food in the café; relax on the terrace with refreshments; be captivated by the exhibitions of sculpture and art; peruse the gift shop and be charmed by the knowledgeable and friendly team.  I can highly recommend a visit to the Garden Café for a nice cup of tea and slice of homemade cake – it would be rude not too! [Picnics at Pashley Manor may be taken in the Car Park field, with a marvellous view of the front façade of the House and surrounding hills, where there are some tables and benches.  Picnics may not be taken in the Gardens. Please ensure that all litter is taken away with you]

After our visit the coach will head straight back to Hythe to take us home
