Itinerary

Day 1 Thursday:  Travel to Derby

After picking up along our usual coach boarding routes using the main coach and a feeder coach, we have coffee and biscuits at the Holiday Inn Hotel Rochester.

Then with all of us on the main coach we head for the Shuttleworth Collection, near Bedford. Here you can buy lunch in the delightful Visitor Centre restaurant with seating both inside and out.  After lunch you can either visit the Collection at Shuttleworth or the beautiful Swiss Garden. If the weather is inclement Richard Shuttleworth’s Collection of cars and planes is fascinating, but if it is a sunny day you may prefer to visit the lovely Swiss gardens in the Estate grounds. Teresa will provide more information on the day to help you decide. If you want to have plenty of time to visit the attractions you could bring a picnic to eat on the coach en-route, but please be aware picnics cannot be eaten at Shuttleworth.

After our visit we drive to Derby and our hotel where we will have time to freshen up before a 3 course dinner in the hotel restaurant this evening.

Day 2 Friday:  King Richard III Visitor Centre and Leicester Cathedral

The Visitor Centre stands on the site of the medieval friary where King Richard III’s remains were buried over 500 years ago.  The exhibition reveals one of the greatest archaeological detective stories ever told and features the first ever genome sequencing of ancient DNA. We will see the exact place where Richard’s remains were buried, which has since been transformed into a glass-floored contemplative space for visitors.  After our visit to the centre we have some free time to find lunch, either in the visitor centre itself or in one of the eateries nearby. In the early afternoon we have a visit booked to nearby Leicester Cathedral where King Richard III was re-interred in 2015. If you prefer you can spend the time exploring Leicester. We return to our hotel for dinner

Day 3 Saturday:Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and free time in Derby

This morning we visit the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre. The Battle of Bosworth is where Richard III lost his life and having already visited his final resting place it will be fitting to see where the Battle was fought. This small but fascinating visitor centre is situated amongst beautiful countryside and is a great place to spend an hour or two. The Bosworth Experience gives plenty of information about the site and the Battle and there is a nice café if you fancy a coffee.  If you are feeling energetic you can walk around the grounds.

Around lunchtime we return to Derby and have the afternoon free to explore at leisure. There are plenty of things to see and do here with the Cathedral, Silk Mill, Museum, Intu Shopping centre, Market Hall and plenty of  independent shops all within walking distance of our hotel. If you want more time to see this interesting city you could always opt out of our morning visit and spend the whole day in Derby. It is up to you.

Dinner in the hotel restaurant this evening

Day 4 Sunday:Buxton

After breakfast we can enjoy a drive through the scenic Peak District to Buxton.

On arrival we have coffee and an introductory talk about Buxton from the Director of Discover Buxton Tours in the Great House Hotel.

Then you can explore the town at leisure and find somewhere to have a spot of lunch. With the beautiful Pavilion and Gardens just across from the hotel and the town centre just around the corner there is plenty for us to see and do here.

In the afternoon we rejoin our coach for a guided coach tour taking us to a couple of fascinating “Hidden Villages” in the surrounding countryside. Rich in history we will learn more about this fascinating area.  We return to Derby driving through the Derbyshire Dales with more glorious scenery, for our final dinner in the hotel this evening.

Day 5 Monday: Return to Kent

Our journey home will be broken by a lunch stop at Jordan’s Mill and Gardens near Biggleswade.  During our visit you can buy lunch in the restaurant, wander in the garden or tour the old mill. The restaurant has seating inside, but if the weather is sunny you can sit outside on decking right by the river. The gardens here are unique food and flower gardens where crops, vegetables and fruits are grown in an ornamental setting alongside wild flowers and cultivated garden plants. You can take a self-guided tour of the mill and discover the workings through inter-active displays and a floor to ceiling window. Our coach will then take us back to the Holiday Inn Hotel Rochester for a welcome cup of tea before we continue our journey home using the main coach and a feeder coach.

ADVISORY NOTE: Teresa endeavours to accommodate all club members, including those with disabilities. However, her experience indicates that some short breaks are not suitable for those who have certain disabilities or conditions.  As usual on our short breaks, this one will involve some general walking as we visit the places of interest listed, but nothing too strenuous. If you manage our day excursions on your own, you should be fine on this short break. Things can be taken at your own personal pace and it should be possible for everyone to enjoy the holiday even if some of you are more active whilst others need to take things slower and/or need the help of a walking stick. Also, for safety reasons, I do ask that anyone who finds getting on and off the coach a bit difficult and needs to take their time should wait until everyone else has got off the coach before they disembark.  They can then negotiate the steps safely in their own time without worrying about holding other club members up. Please phone me if you have any questions or concerns.
